Dry Dog Food Storage: Keep the Original Bag and the Details

A neat pantry should still preserve the information that comes with your dog’s food. The original packaging can be useful long after the first scoop.

Keep the bag inside the container

FDA recommends keeping pet food in its original bag or container. If you use another storage bin for dry food, place the whole bag inside rather than pouring the food loose into it. That keeps the product details together and makes it easier to identify a particular batch if needed.

Keep a simple record

Write down the date you opened the bag and retain its lot information and best-by details. Follow the package’s storage directions. Keep the feeding area separate from household food preparation and prevent pets from accessing bags or containers on their own.

Plan the outing portion

If you take food on a short trip, pack only the appropriate amount and retain the product information at home. Use clean feeding equipment and follow the maker’s care instructions. A portable bowl can help organize a stop, but it is not a food-storage container. Avoid buying a larger bag simply for a tidy-looking pantry if it does not suit your household’s usage.
