Raw Dog Food: Five Questions to Ask Before Changing Diets
A raw-feeding trend is not a substitute for an individual nutrition plan. Before changing your dog’s food, discuss nutritional needs and household safety with your veterinary team.

Ask about infection risk
CDC does not recommend feeding raw pet food or treats to dogs and cats. Raw products can carry germs that affect pets and people. Freezing or a premium-looking label should not be treated as a guarantee that a food is free of harmful organisms.
Ask about nutritional suitability
Is the proposed food appropriate for this dog’s life stage and health needs? Who is responsible for formulating and checking the diet? Do not assemble a homemade feeding plan from social media recipes or assume an ingredient list proves balance. Bring the exact product or recipe to your veterinarian.
Ask about the practical plan
How will food be stored and handled? Are there household members at increased risk from infection? What should you do if the dog becomes unwell? Those questions deserve answers before a purchase. A separate, washable pet bowl can support organized feeding, but equipment does not make a raw diet safe. A packable bowl is an outing accessory, not a nutritional recommendation.
