Choosing a Cat Scratcher: Shape, Stability, and Placement

A cat scratcher earns its place by being useful to your cat. Before choosing a color or a clever shape, look at where and how your cat already scratches.

Match the direction your cat prefers

Does your cat stretch against an upright surface or work across a flat area? Cats Protection recommends offering a horizontal scratching pad for cats that prefer scratching horizontally. For an upright post, look for a stable base and enough height for a full stretch.

A small scratcher may fit neatly beside a sofa but still move when your cat leans into it. Check stability on the actual floor where you plan to use it, following the product’s assembly instructions.

Make placement part of the decision

Putting a new post in a remote corner can make it easy to overlook. Cats Protection suggests placing a scratching surface near an area already being scratched or near a resting place where a cat may stretch after waking.

Allow a clear approach and keep the surface accessible. In a multi-cat household, provide scratching options in different locations rather than expecting everyone to share one contested spot.

Compare practical details before buying

Measure the intended area, including the base width. Check whether the surface can be replaced, how the product is cleaned, and whether it needs wall attachment. Read the assembly and safety instructions instead of relying only on a styled product photo.

When your cat uses the intended surface, respond calmly and positively. Avoid punishment: scratching is normal cat behavior, and the goal is to provide suitable outlets.

Keep a brief note of which surface gets used over the next few days. Your cat’s preference can guide the next purchase more reliably than buying several different designs at once. If scratching behavior changes suddenly or comes with distress, ask your veterinarian for guidance.
